What to Expect this Year

Early Literacy Skills
In reading, we will be focusing on early literacy skills including letter recognition (both uppercase and lowercase), letter sounds and sight word recognition. We will be reading aloud everyday with your children and discussing the beginning, middle and end of a story. We will also be identifying characters, setting, author/illustrator and practicing making predictions. Additionally, we will be reinforcing all literacy skills taught in Kindergarten with fun hands-on “literacy centers” daily. Eventually, we will practice rhyming, vowel sounds and learn many sight words! It is really exciting to see many students already reading in May! Reading by May is a goal, and we realize all students develop at different rates. We feel it is very likely that your child will be an emergent reader in May, if he or she completes homework and attends school regularly.

Math / Number Sense
In math, we will be counting objects and building a strong number sense, learning to write numbers 0 – 10 and then numbers 10-20. Later, with lots of practice, counting to 100 will begin to happen. Close to that time, we will celebrate the 100th day of school with a day filled with fun activities and projects.

Writing / Fine Motor Skills
In writing, we are going to focus on writing our names, writing uppercase and lowercase letters, and eventually using the sounds we hear to write on our own.
